Introduction to Gaming  by Jourdan.T

The group topic for our collaborative writing exercise is gaming. Our group consists of five members with varying degrees of gaming knowledge and experience. Hopefully, this should allow us to learn and help each other along the way. So, what is gaming? Simply put, gaming is an action or practice of playing games. Sweet! games, what types of games are there? Well, I for one know that there are three most common types of games. There are board games like (Monopoly), tabletop games like (Dungeons and Dragons) and video games like (Minecraft). But we will be looking at video games as it is probably the most popular out of all the games. What are video games you might ask? Video games are digitally generated interactive games that you use computers or consoles to play with. You might argue that video games are interactive games based on simulations of everyday life or it could be a pronoun artistic expression of an object. The point is with video games it’s digitally made, the only thing that’s stopping us from making a game is creativity, so the sky’s the limit as they would say.

Why do we play video games? First of all, the most obvious reason why we play video games is that it is absolutely fun and entertaining. Personally, playing video games has always been close to my heart and it’s one of the greatest joys of my childhood. I can relate to how people have now turned to video games as a form of stress relief after all the pressure and demands of everyday life. Video games can bring out the inner child that has been hiding in there all along. Sometimes you do get a feel of how video games have provided many people with a sense of escapism just to escape the harsh reality of life.

But to put out the most logical reason, what sets apart video games from other forms of entertainment is their interactivity. Many single-player games nowadays have interesting telling stories that pull you in and realistic graphics that you can’t tell if it’s really real or not. One might say that video games these days are high-budget interactive movies made possible due to their well-planned out story, sound design, level design and talented voice actors to bring the game alive. It is this kind of detailing in a game that attracts most gamers to play video games. Of course, some might prefer the online PVP (Player Versus Player) competitive nature of video games. It is natural to feel good about winning against some other person, it gives a sense of accomplishment and it’s what makes competing fun in the first place.

How many different types of genres of video games are there? The answer is a lot. Even a seasoned gaming veteran like me can’t even tell you the list of gaming genres. There’s just a plethora of genres or types of games available, from FPS (first-person shooters) like Valorant to RPG (role playing games) like Skyrim to MMO (massively multiplayer online game)the likes of World of Warcraft and Sea of thieves, the number of available games is mind-blowing, to say the least. You could even say that there’s a game for everyone in the gaming world.

There’s more to come.
